    Beginning in 1976 Time Life Books started what was probably one of their most ambitious book series the entire history of World War II For seven years high quality hardbound books were delivered to our house in the mail I recall the delivery being quite an event for me and I would usually beat my dad to the books There are thirty nine books in the series Each book examines a different aspect of the war Everything from the Japanese home front to the neutral nations in Europe to the liberation of the Philippines Considering the size of the war it was the only way to do it Each book has 208 pages and is handsomely illustrated with numerous maps, photos and pictorial essays Some years there would be as many as five books released while other years would only see two or three though the tempo picked up in the later years I recall my father started the series in 1977 and he received the last books my junior year in college 1988 As I stated earlier the books are high quality and they have held up over the years both physically and in terms of the writing They are not revisionist works nor are they trying to prove a radical or controversial thesis They go down easily and are intended for the casual reader ...
